Three Ideals In The DEC and NAEYC Code Of Ethics I Find The Most Significant

I.                   Professional Practice
Professional and Interpersonal Behavior
2. We shall demonstrate the highest standards of personal integrity, truthfulness, and honesty in all our professional activities in order to inspire the trust and confidence of the children and families and of those with whom we work (DEC, 2000).

I think this is one of the most important things we should do as professionals. I try to follow this principle not only in my professional life but also in my personal life. I think this speaks highly of one’s moral standard and is essential to carrying oneself with dignity.

IV. Ethical and Evidence Based Practices
2. We shall use every resource, including referral when appropriate, to ensure high quality services are accessible and are provided to children and families (DEC, 2000).

I found this significant because it is our duty to ensure all children and families get the services they need in order to be successful. I also believe the earlier we step in to help, the more successful the child will become.

            Ethical Responsibilities to Children
                        Ideals
1-1.5-To create and maintain safe and healthy settings that foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and that respect their dignity and their contributions (NAEYC, 2005).

I think this is an important ideal to consider because it helps foster healthy relationships. I feel children thrive in an environment when they feel safe. All children should feel that their contributions are needed and worthy and it is our job to ensure them that they are all special in their own way.

  2. The ideals you chose are essential to the field of education and I enjoyed reading your thoughts about them. I resonated with the first one you posted about integrity, trust, and honesty. Trust is something that is built during the foundational years of a child's life, and if they learn trust, they are able to apply it to other areas of their life. If we want children and families to trust us, we must demonstrate our trustworthiness and integrity.

Your last ideal relates to one of my professional goals about establishing and maintaining a safe and healthy classroom environment. When children feel safe and encouraged they are more willing and able to learn, collaborate, and explore. I found a book called "Encouragement In The Classroom" by Joan Young, which has more information about the affects of a classroom environment, if you're interested in reading more about the research.

    Thank you for sharing!
